Nigeria’s Super Falcons have delivered one of the biggest wins of the ongoing Women’s World Cup by grabbing a 3-2 win over co-host of the competition, Australia.
The first 20 minutes was exhilarating, with the Matildas dangerous on the ball and controlling possession. But the Nigerian footballers grew into the game.
As the game headed towards first-half injury time, Australia took the lead. Emily Van Egmond arrived late into the area and side-footed the ball into the back of the net. But that wasn’t the end of this thrilling first half as Nigeria equalised through Uchenna Kanu.
Into the second half and Nigeria were at their clinical best midway through the half as Osinachi Ohale headed in from close range to give the Super Eagles a lead. Nigeria then got their third soon after as Asisat Oshoala pounced on some terrible Australian defending and finished well into an empty net. Australia pulled one back through Alanna Kennedy before the game was wrapped up.
The win has now sent Nigeria who drew 0-0 with Canada in their first match, to the top of Group B
